TEACHER • LEADER • LEARNER
Heather Duncan NBCT is Interim Principal at Earl Shapiro Hall, the Early Childhood Division of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She started her career in Posen-Robbins School District 143 ½, founded Ahadi Early Learning Center which she directed for 5 years and taught preschool in Chicago Public Schools at South Shore Fine Arts Academy.
Channeling more than 20 years of teaching experience, she designs professional development materials and activities in response to the ever-evolving requirements for early childhood teachers and our society's never-changing need to insure equity within organizations. Her goals are to help others view the world through an equity lens and create classroom environments where young children can be themselves and explore learning in ways that make school irresistible.
In 2012 Heather started working outside of her classroom with CPS’ REACH team to create assessments and an Early Childhood addendum to the CPS Framework for Teaching. She also created and presented professional development materials for teachers as a member of the Framework Specialist and Early Childhood Learning Leaders teams. Her teacher leadership work includes the inaugural Chicago Public Education Fund Educator Advisory Committee, Cohort 3 of the National America Achieves Fellowship For Teachers & Principals, Chicago Foundation For Education's Action Research Leadership Fellowship and Study Groups, the 2017-18 Chicago Public Schools Teacher Ambassador program, the 2018-19 Teach Plus Early Childhood Fellowship, National Board Teacher Certification and the 2018 Golden Apple For Excellence In Teaching Award.
